Dr. Rick Bhim, BSc, MD (IMG), ND, discovered the profound impact of Naturopathic Medicine upon his return to his hometown of Toronto, following the completion of his conventional medical degree in Chicago. Driven by an unwavering commitment to education and patient well-being, Dr. Bhim assumes the role of a passionate educator at CCNM, nurturing the next generation of naturopaths while staying abreast of the latest advancements. His extensive hospital background, collaborating seamlessly with medical colleagues to integrate natural and pharmaceutical therapies, coupled with his private practice experience, uniquely positions him as a comprehensive and empathetic Naturopathic Doctor and educator.

At the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic, Dr. Bhim realizes his lifelong aspiration of providing inclusive healthcare to all individuals, irrespective of their backgrounds or financial circumstances. Prior to completing my education at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM), I graduated from McMaster University with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and minor in Psychology. During this time, I was further exposed to the powers of exercise, nutrition, and mindfulness, and how these factors ultimately affect our physical wellbeing and overall risk of disease. Having played soccer and other sports my whole life, I felt motivated to funnel my energy towards encouraging physical activity within the community as well. Outside of working at my school’s gym facility, I volunteered at a gym for those with neurological impairments and published research related to removing barriers and enhancing physical activity among those with disabilities.

During my years at CCNM, my passion for holistic health strengthened, and my interests within it continued to evolve. Eager to learn and stay up to date with the research, I attended conferences and worked part-time in the supplement industry. It was through these experiences that I discovered the significant role naturopathic medicine can play in cancer care and started pursuing opportunities that allowed me to explore this further. One of the more pivotal experiences for me was seeing firsthand the impact naturopathic cancer support can have on patients, while shadowing an ND who focuses in this area; I was inspired and motivated to do the same for my own future patients.

Fast forward to now, I am consistently humbled by the experience of working with patients affected by cancer. I enjoy taking the time to educate patients about their health, the science behind our therapies and why we recommend them. I strongly believe naturopathic medicine fills an essential gap in cancer care at every stage of treatment, and I strive to contribute my best to this care by continuing to build upon my knowledge in integrative oncology through research and clinical experience. Having witnessed the immense benefit it provides patients at each stage of their treatment, I am grateful for the opportunity to work in an integrative setting that prioritizes safety and efficacy when combining natural therapies alongside conventional treatments. Put simply, naturopathic cancer care aims to optimize quality of life and improve outcomes, and my mission as a resident naturopathic doctor is to help facilitate this for all patients at the CCNM Integrative Cancer Centre.

When I’m not in the clinic, I continue to play a lot of soccer and enjoy hiking or biking on nearby trails as much as I can.

As a licensed naturopathic doctor in Ontario, I am also an active member of the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians (OncANP), Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors (OAND), and Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND).

I’ve had a longstanding passion for integrative oncology - the safe integration of evidence-based naturopathic therapies with conventional oncology treatments offers immense benefits for people with cancer. This paradigm of care involves supporting people in all stages of conventional cancer treatment to help maintain quality of life and improve outcomes. I believe that integrating the two systems of medicine is the future of healthcare. As a strong proponent of this model of care, I am very pleased to work with the patients of the CCNM Integrative Cancer Centre (ICC) as a resident naturopathic doctor.

I graduated from the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) program at McMaster University. During my undergraduate degree, I was first exposed to naturopathic medicine through a research-based course that provided me the opportunity to publish my first article. From there, I developed a strong interest in the evidence-based use of various natural agents in promoting health and wellness. As a naturopathic medical student, I continued to engage in research activities such as working with the Patterson Institute for Integrative Cancer Research and have contributed to various systematic reviews in integrative oncology. My collaborative research projects have been recognized with awards and published in various journals. The scientific posters that I’ve been involved with have been accepted in conferences across North America. I strive to utilize my research background in patient care to create safe and effective evidence-based treatment plans. My volunteer work with oncology patients at Sunnybrook Hospital, the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Colorectal Cancer Canada has also enhanced my understanding of the patient experience.

My research and clinical experiences have motivated me to continue building upon my knowledge in integrative oncology and naturopathic medicine to provide high quality care. I am excited to be working with the team here at the CCNM ICC to serve our community.
